Kohoan

The spirit of the tea master Kobori Enshu

This villa is modeled on the Kohoan tea house in Kyoto designed by Kobori Enshu, tea master to the Tokugawa shogun in the early Edo period. The spacial design, in which the tea house garden flows into the tea room, is a beautiful expression of Japanese tradition, which considers nature as something that resides inside each of us. In the tea garden,
every detail is faithfully reproduced, including the washbasin inscribed with the character for dew, and the stone lantern.
Kobori Enshu designed Kohoan based on the themes of travel and ships. The pleasant sounds of the river are a part of its design.

Zangetsutei

A tea room for entertaining aristocrats

The Zangetsutei (Kyoto) was designed as a tea room for entertaining aristocrats, and is said to have been built by Toyotomi Hideyoshi in his mansion, Jurakudai. It was scaled down and reproduced by the Omote Senke school of tea ceremony founded by the master Sen Rikyu, and has been preserved through to modern times. Its features include a distinctive type of ceiling, called a “kakekomi-tenjo,” and a spacious alcove called a “nijo-toko.” This villa makes use of Japanese architecture with a continuous flow between interior and exterior, and its atmosphere of refined simplicity, called “wabi” in Japanese, might just give you insights into the infinite universe.

Shonantei

Modeled on a tea house touched by history

Shonantei is located in Saiho-ji Temple (Kyoto), known as the “moss temple.” The motif is based on a tea house influence by a historic episode in which Iwakura Tomomi went into hiding during the Bakumatsu period. There are many playful touches, such as turning the doorway used for bringing in the equipment for the tea ceremony, called a “kato-guchi,” into the doorway to the restroom. In addition to its open-air bath, this is the only special villa equipped with a modular bathroom.

Karakasatei/Shiguretei

Feel the whimsy and humor of paired tea houses themed on rain and umbrellas

Kodai-ji Temple (Kyoto), where the original Karakasatei and Shiguretei are located, is best known as a temple constructed by Hideyoshi’s widow Kita no Mandokoro to pray for the salvation of Hideyoshi’s soul. Karakasatei (“karakasa” is the Japanese word for a sun umbrella) serves as the living room, and the roof of the restroom is made from bamboo laid out in a spoked pattern reminiscent of an umbrella. The two-story gable-roofed Shiguretei is the bedroom. This entertaining and luxurious villa also reproduces the covered pathway connecting the two spaces. The whimsy and humor of the paired names are mirrored in the comfortable atmosphere.
